Following
the success of his two previous books My
Dad, My Hero and Forgotten Heroes,
Michael Bentinck wrote his third book A Will To Live. The book
is made up of three true stories given to him by three very remarkable men. The first
story is another episode in the life of Jim Bentinck, Michael's late father, during the
war when Jim served as the driver for the Japanese Executioner. We hear of the horrific
things that Jim had to witness and also of the ways in which he risked his own life to
help save others.
The second story in the book comes from a very
brave man, a Mr Stanley Chown MBE, who was one of the very few survivors from the death
camp at Sonkari. Stanley Chown was a first class chef and you will see how he saved many
of his comrades' lives by cooking dishes that you and I would not dream of eating today.
Stanley later went on to become Head Chef at Pembroke College, Cambridge, cooking meals
for such famous people as Prince Charles.
The third story in A Will To Live comes
from Percy Legge. This very brave man is one of very few men who survived working on the
famous death railway. But, as if that wasn't enough, Percy also survived a trip to Japan
where he then had to suffer working down a coalmine in very unsafe conditions.
