My
Dad, My Hero was Michael's first book. It is a true story, written from
notes kept by his late father, Jim Bentinck, and from the things that Jim told Michael
during the three months before he died of his experiences in life, especially from the
year 1942 until 1946.
The
book is a tribute to Michael's father, Jim, who was in the 1st battalion of the
Cambridgeshire Regiment, when he was captured by the Japanese after the fall of Singapore
in 1942. It is a harrowing true story of the disease, deprivation and horrific cruelty
suffered by Jim and many, many, other Far East Prisoners of War (FEPOWs), at the hands of
their Japanese captors, during the war.
The
book tells, in graphic detail, of how Jim, who was only twenty years of age when he was
captured, had to serve as the driver for Japan's chief executioner in Singapore. His
duties included sticking the heads of victims on poles for public display, as depicted on
the books cover illustration by Ronald Searle, and then burying the rest of their remains.
The
book has now been re-printed four times and has sold over 10,000 copies.
My
Dad My Hero contains 64 pages and a photographs section.
